"Yeah, but I'll be all right. Don't worry."
The man stopped and looked at him, then looked at the woman and nodded. "We'd better go. He needs to rest."
"Yeah."
"Where will you be?"
"I'll find a hotel."
"Good. It'll be all right. We'll get you a room."
"Thanks."
The man looked back at the woman, nodded, and they started down the sidewalk. "Don't worry about it," he said, "she's been through a lot."
"Yeah," Thomas said.
They reached the hotel and the man asked Thomas if he'd like to go up to the room first.
"Yeah, that'd be okay."
The man nodded and they went up the stairs. Thomas didn't know where to go, so he just followed the man. The room was on the second floor, and it was fairly large.
The man asked him if he'd like to sit down.
"No, I'm fine."
The man nodded and went to the door. He turned back and said, "You can stay here for a couple of days if you like."
"I'll be all right."
"Okay."
The man turned and went out the door. Thomas sat down on the bed. He had no idea what to do, so he just sat there. He felt like he was sitting in a jail, like he was being watched.
Thomas sat there for a few minutes, and then he heard the door open. It was a woman. She was older, in her late thirties, and she was carrying a large suitcase. She was thin, and her hair was almost completely white. She looked at Thomas for a few seconds, then she said, "Do you have any idea how long you've been sitting there?"
"A few minutes."
"Are you hurt?"
"No."
"You don't look hurt."
